okay, let’s talk about this part of the tfp finale.
I’ve said before that I think Ratchet stayed on Earth as atonement for what he did during his time on the Nemesis, but as much as it is him enforcing punishment on himself, it’s also a chance to finally be free of the constraints of the war. He’s been with Optimus since before the war, he’s fought through eons of conflict as their forces and equipment dwindled until they were half a dozen fugitives recycling human scrap into equipment. Somehow though, somehow, they made it through- and not only did they live, but Cybertron is back.
Ratchet never made a game of hiding his priorities. He wanted the war to end, he wanted Optimus to live, he wanted to restore Bumblebee’s voice box, and he wanted Cybertron back. At the end of the series, against all odds, Ratchet has gotten his wishes. After his role in the recreation of the Omega Lock however, he is confronted with the darker parts of himself- the parts that were bitter and angry enough to sacrifice billions of human lives just for the chance to fight over Cybertron again. He never expected to live past the completion of his assignment- Megatron had told him as much, but so fed up with the war, with Optimus’ wasting their chance to revitalise Cybertron, with his own inability to be more productive after years of scrounging through Earth scraps and even now working with nothing but human technological crumbs, he let himself give in to what he really wanted. To be here- at the end, despite having made the biggest betrayal, to still be standing beside Optimus, is something that he cannot allow himself to have. Ratchet is undoubtably his own worst critic- he takes the weight of everything he cannot fix and every action he should have taken on his shoulders and refuses to share the load. Optimus would take him back to Cybertron- it is clear that Optimus does not want him to stay on Earth, but through his experiences Ratchet has realised something important about himself, something that he is now acting upon.
When he says that he knows where he is needed he is stating his truer purpose by omission. Cybertron does not need him. He is old, he is bitter, he is a reminder of the planet’s downfall, of everything that the revitalised planet should not represent. Cybertron does not need Ratchet, and even if it did, Ratchet does not deserve to see it anyway. So he decides to stay. You can visibly see the weight lifted from his shoulders in the fifth gif. For the first time in the entire series we see Ratchet content- at ease. Eyes and frame relaxed, no more trials awaiting him and Optimus smiles back at him, eyes tinged in sadness, and bids him farewell.
Optimus knew that Ratchet was planning to stay. Likely, Ratchet had spoken to him about the idea, because I believe he would have told Optimus about his contribution to the synthetic energon formula, or more to the point, his willing participation in it’s creation, when he and Optimus debriefed after the final battle. But Optimus, being Optimus, told him that it didn’t matter, that the result would have been the same whether he’d wanted to participate or not, and reminded him of the fact that that very cybermatter is what finally allowed them to fix Bumblebee’s voice box. But that would not be enough for Ratchet. He needs to feel the weight of his guilt, shackle it to his frame so that he can never forget that he wasn’t good enough- that he will never be good enough.
What he isn’t admitting though, not even to himself, is that he is also being selfish once again. A chance to be free of all of the stress of the war, a chance to re-evaluate and re-focus when he isn’t always on alert, watching the monitors and waiting for his team to come back while he sits on the sidelines- it’s a something that he hasn’t dared dream of- too busy with what must happen first to ever think past the end of the fighting. He doesn’t deserve to return to Cybertron, but maybe Earth is exactly what he needs. It is only the former reason that he expresses to Optimus however, and so Optimus tried to reassure him, tell him that he could return, but Ratchet expressed a wish to stay. A wish that Optimus would respect, if Ratchet truly wanted it, but he doesn’t want his oldest friend to be parted from the world he had been waiting to see restored any longer. You can see evidence of this in the second gif. The animators really went the extra mile with his expression. While most of the characters are given frozen shocked expressions Optimus, in the top left corner, is dealing with other things.
He is at first not stunned, like the others, but disappointed- surely Ratchet wouldn’t truly decide to stay? But he does, and Optimus dips his head, just for a second, to collect himself, before levelling a carefully neutral expression. He’ll support Ratchet in whatever he chooses, but really, this isn’t what Optimus wants to happen. Optimus waits until the very last moment to say goodbye to Ratchet- the spacebridge is open, everyone else has said their farewells, and now it the last chance for Optimus to say goodbye to the friend that has followed him to the ends of many worlds- the last chance for Ratchet to change his mind. ‘Until we meet again old friend,’ is a phrase that is uncertain in its timing, though they know that Ratchet will return if needed for a medical emergency. What Optimus doesn’t know is how long it will be before Ratchet decides he can return home properly. Knowing Ratchet as well as he does- knowing him as the mech who still bore the weight of not fixing Bumblebee’s voice box all the way from Tyger Pax- that day will be a long, long time coming. But Optimus respects Ratchet’s decision, and so he leaves him behind, wishing him well, and hopes that they will see each other again one day- on Cybertron, in the new world that he and Ratchet both helped bring about.
The other character who takes Ratchet’s news especially hard is Bumblebee. Not only does he get the most subtle of animations during the second gif [enlarged below for ease of viewing],
he is also the only bot who’s reaction we see in the first gif. [he should be visible in the bottom left hand corner but that had to be cut due to gif sizing issues- my bad]. Here it is below.
Ratchet announces that he’s leaving and Bumblebee is horrified. He and Ratchet have a parental-child bond- only just re-emphasized by Bumblebee’s bounding hug when his voice was restored. In that scene, when he realised his voice was back, he didn’t head for Optimus, or for Arcee- who pointed it out, instead he leapt to hug Ratchet in sheer joy, because this was just as important to Ratchet as it was to him. Ratchet loves Bumblebee enough to be donate his t-cog to him, and Bumblebee reciprocates that love. For Ratchet to say that he’s leaving- that he’s not coming back, after they just got him back when he could have been dead aboard the Nemesis, when Bumblebee and everyone else had nearly died; why would he do that?
Bumblebee knows that Ratchet wants to go back to Cybertron, but unlike Optimus he doesn’t have the breadth of experience to fully understand the thought process going on inside Ratchet’s head, so he is left reeling. Bumblebee would be the one to keep most in touch with Ratchet while he is on Earth I believe, coming to visit Raf and always staying for longer than he needs to, reminding Ratchet that they all miss him and won’t he just come back to Cybertron- even for a little while? Of course Ratchet would bluster, saying that he is quite comfortable where he is thank you very much, that there’s no need to rush back to Cybertron because they’re all less likely to die of anything other than their own stupidity at this point and Bumblebee would laugh before seeing him off with a sad smile and a reminder not to stay away too long.
That’s what would eventually get Ratchet to move back to Cybertron. One day, when he’s heard enough to know the Cybertron is well on its way to repopulation, full of new [and old] life, he’d return to see it; the newly erected buildings, the vast stretches of unpopulated wilderness, the colourful collection of returned Cybertronians. He’d see it all, chaperoned by his scout-turned-warrior, and finally reunite with Optimus, content in the knowledge that all would be well.
Or at least he would have, had Predacons Rising not happened.
